The Parade

November 17, 2012 at 7:24 am (Poetry) (, )

Parading through apartments that used to be mine.
Lives I used to live.
People I used to be.

What more is there to say?

If you are squeamish

Don’t prod the
beach rubble

Sappho #64

September 29, 2012 at 11:57 pm (Poetry) (, , , , )

Tonight I’ve watched

The moon and then
the Pleiades
go down

The night is now
half-gone; youth
goes; I am

in bed alone.

You may forget but

Let me tell you
this: someone in
some future time
will think of us

February

May 4, 2012 at 1:19 am (Poetry) (, , , )

For some

the epitome of winter,

With its bitter morning frost

and crisp grass under foot,

is January.

But I say

when the winter wind seems eternal,

across the wide expanse of a frozen cheek,

like a pond on which we might skate,

it is February.

Sullied by ploughs, trampled by feet

half-melted  and shoveled aside,

Afraid that winter will not end,

We look out at our windows not at snow,

but at the remains of snow.

What would it take to remember

 those first few

radiant

flakes?

Vacation, Via Negativa

May 1, 2012 at 3:51 am (Lists, Poetry) (, , , )

For those of you who are curious about how I spent my vacation, I have quantified its contents for you.

What I Did NOT Do on Vacation

I did not set an alarm clock.
I did not put on dress slacks.
I did not punch out for my lunch breaks.

I did not refrain from taking naps.
Nor did I refrain from eating copious amounts of Moose Tracks ice cream.

I did not get on a plane or go through a single security check.
I did not have to put my precious puppy in a kennel.
And I most certainly did not complain that the rain spoiled it.

4am

April 28, 2012 at 8:02 am (Poetry) (, )

We all know nothing good
has ever transpired
at this late hour.

I think of you
All of you
The beautiful.
The funny.
The charming
And the strong.

The worthless piece of shit      and
The one who almost killed me.

I’m not certain I can do this.

There are some things
a fresh coat of paint
can’t solve.

There is much
that must be done today.

But, alas…
there is a cat sleeping
oh    so     peacefully
on my left leg
dreaming perhaps of dinner
or rodents.

Or perhaps
     of nothing at all.

What I Learned in Sunday School

January 10, 2011 at 7:28 pm (Uncategorized) ()

You have to look pretty for God,
or else you’re a sinner.
Don’t forget your slip
and your bright pink lipstick.
Don’t pick your nose
and definitely don’t worry if                                                                                                                                   you can’t remember the words to a hymn.
Just fake it.
Under no circumstances should you smile
or laugh.

Just remember, the level of your piety
is directly proportional
to how uncomfortable your shoes are
and whoever puts the most money in the collection plate
wins.
